Thanks to the invitation from CERE/UMAG in Punta Arenas, AEA-UNPA participated in the teaching of the course “Value Chain of Green Hydrogen and derivatives”, in the section of wind power, measurements and electrical interface, in two sessions between Friday 15 and Saturday 16 of May.

Chile, and UMAG in South Patagonia, has taken significant and concrete steps in an emerging industry that seeks to leverage the carbon neutrality of hydrogen produced from renewable energy and the enormous energy content of this element to transform and decarbonize vast productive sectors. The almost negligible water demand of these processes, and the abundance of wind resource in the region, make this opportunity extremely attractive. Education and technical training, with adequate teaching equipment and the construction of pilot plants, are solid pillars upon which local human resources can be developed to sustain this activity.

The course, which runs from April to July 2026, is organized by the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Magallanes (UMAG), the Center for Energy Resources Studies (CERE), the UCSC, and the CORFO Magallanes development corporation, with support from private companies Gasco Magallanes and KeyFlot Chile. Approximately thirty local engineers, technicians, and technology entrepreneurs are participating. The theoretical classes on Friday the 15th were led by Rafael Oliva from AEA, M.Sc. Eng. María Rosa Gallardo (UMAG), and Dr. Daniela Navarro (UMAG). The practical activities in the Renewable Energies laboratory, which demonstrates chemical production from the energy of a small-scale VAWT-700 wind turbine, took place on Saturday with Oliva and MR Gallardo as instructors and support from Technician Pedro Gallardo. Attendees were also able to visit the facilities of the new Renewable Hydrogen Laboratories at FI-UMAG, located on the CERE site. These larger laboratories are in preparation phase until they complete the safety certification processes required by SEC-Chile. The management of these laboratories has been led by Eng. María Luisa Ojeda, Eng. María Rosa Gallardo, and CERE Director Dr. Humberto Vidal, in coordination with the Faculty of Engineering.
